If you don’t currently live under a rock you have probably heard of WordPress and by now you probably know that WordPress is one of the most popular, if not the most popular way to build a website. But with all this talk about WordPress maybe you need to know more about it and why you should be using it for your site.
WordPress currently powers over 25% of all websites. And that’s not just websites built by you and me, huge companies like Disney, Sony Music, Microsoft, and more use the website building powerhouse as well. WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS) and it’s free for anyone to use. Essentially, it is a free tool to format and build your website, and everybody likes free stuff.

But maybe you have heard of or used website builders in the past and they worked great for you. How does WordPress differ you ask? Well WordPress is an open-source CMS and is self-hosted whereas free builders like Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace are well, just website builders and are hosted on those specific servers. For example, if you build your site using the free Wix website builder then that is where your website will be hosted and will stay: with Wix. It cannot be transferred anywhere else to any other hosting provider or server. With WordPress, you get your website on a bunch of files which can be installed onto any server of your choice.

When you build a website using WordPress you have access to a huge variety of themes that you can choose from to be the “backbone” of your site and in the layout that you like. Then to really start customizing your site you have access to tons of widgets and plugins. There are both free and paid, allowing options for everyone! Examples of widgets are things like your social media feed on your site, a calendar, a search bar, etc. Plugins are essentially apps that allow you to add features and other functionalities to your website. Examples of plugins would be things like WooCommerce (makes your site into an ecommerce store), Job Manager plugin, gallery plugin, and more.
